Atlantic International University, Inc. (AIU) is a for-profit distance learning university based in Hawaii. It was founded in December 1998 as Atlantic University, Inc.[2]
Founded out of the desire in the 1980s of a group of businesses to provide continuing education to employees, AIU offers undergraduate and graduate degrees including doctorates.[3][4][5][6]
It is accredited by the U.K. Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities (ASIC),[7] and was formerly accredited by the non-recognized Accrediting Commission International.[3] Since it is not accredited by a recognized United States accreditation agency, its course credits and diplomas are not recognized by many U.S. universities and other institutions.[8] It has also been listed as a non-recognized university in other countries including Ghana,[9] Nigeria (in relation to a branch in Okija),[10] and Oman.[11] It has been characterized as a degree mill,[12][13] and its degrees have been called "fake".[5][14][15]
