Augusto Lucido Bigyan or widely known as Ugu Bigyan is a well-known Filipino potter from Tiaong, Quezon. Today, he holds workshops and serves food for guests in his garden called Ugu Bigyan's Pottery Garden and Restaurant. He also opened a bed and breakfast in the same compound for guests staying overnight called Hele Bed and Breakfast.

Early life and career[edit]

Born on August 1963, Ugu Bigyan was raised and educated in the province of Quezon. After graduating from college in Manila, he got a job as a clerk in Equitable PCI bank. He quickly realized that he was not made for the metropolitan life after working in the bank for nine days. Upon returning home, he explored different media such as painting, sculpting and drawing to discover what it was that he loved doing.

In 1985, he started his career as a self-taught potter. He first started making clay bead necklaces, attaching ceramic accents on his mother's abaca tapestries, and leaving these in Filipiniana stores in the Quad, which is now known as Glorietta, and Greenbelt. Soon, he started receiving bulk orders for these abaca tapestries where each piece took three days to finish.

He was able to join the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) where he was able to export his ceramics to the U.S. and Europe. Together with his business partner, Becky de los Reyes, he supplied Spiegel, Pier One, Gump's, and Pangea. He won the Katha Award for Product Design on 1990 and 1991.

He started supplying ceramic vases and pieces to Amanpulo and eventually, to exclusive El Nido and Punta Feugo beach resorts as well.

In 1995, he stopped exporting to international clients and focused on his craft which allowed him to hold solo and group exhibitions left and right. This also enabled him to explore the world of landscaping, and with the help of architects and engineers, he was hired to create tiles and murals.[1]

Ugu Bigyan's Pottery Garden and Restaurant and Hele Bed and Breakfast[edit]

In 2000, Ugu Bigyan opened Ugu Bigyan's Pottery Garden and Restaurant to the public. The compound consists of 15 huts where he would occasionally hold workshops and cook and serve food to visiting guests. Guests are also allowed to roam around the property to look at and buy his works. He claimed that the compound is the work he was most proud of which took him 10 years to build. [2]

In 2018, he opened Hele, which means "lullaby" in Tagalog, a bed and breakfast for guests who are staying the night.
