The Australia-Indonesia Centre (AIC) is a bilateral initiative of the Australian and Indonesian governments. It is a collaborative research body that funds and co-ordinates joint projects between Australian and Indonesian researchers.

The formation of the centre was announced in 2013 by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott while in Indonesia for talks with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.[1]. It was established with a $15 million grant[2] to “pursue solutions to shared national challenges in areas such as health, food, energy, infrastructure”[3].

The Centre comprises a consortium of 11 universities from Australia and Indonesia. It receives ongoing funding from government, industry and educational institutes and has offices in Melbourne, Australia, and Jakarta and Makassar in Indonesia.

Between 2014 and 2018 the Centre funded more than 70 projects involving 430 researchers, of whom 52% were based in Indonesia and 48% in Australia[4]. It has five ongoing projects, the largest of which is the Partnership for Australia Indonesia Research (PAIR), in cooperation with the government of South Sulawesi[5]
