Australian Outdoor Living, sometimes known as AOL, is a nationwide retailer and manufacturer of outdoor goods and installations. The retail company is located in Australia. The company was founded in 2005 and today has a large market share percentage in the outdoor retail market in Australia.

History[edit]

Australian Outdoor Living was first established in Adelaide, Australia in 2005. Following a number of years of growth, the company expanded its operations nationally throughout Australia, opening showrooms in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. In 2007, the company announced that they would be expanding from a retailer to a manufacturer of outdoor goods.[1]

The Adelaide Advertiser interviewed Colin Kuchel in 2010, in which he spoke about his outdoor business. He stated that nationally Australian Outdoor Living had a turnover of $35 million AUD.[2] At the time, the Australian Bureau of Statistics stated that the market was worth around $98.2 million per quarter, which gave the company around a 9% market share in the outdoor retail market at the time.[2] Later that year, the company made a slight addition to their swimming pool installation service. Weekly Times Messenger announced that AOL would be coordinating all the planning and paperwork for the installations, removing the hassle of bureaucracy from the client.[3] This move in 2010, coincided with a rapid growth in demand for in-ground swimming pools in the Adelaide area.[4]

The Adelaide Advertiser in June 2010 covered the company when discussing artificial turf and the move by Australians to lead a more maintenance free life.[5] By 2012, managing director Colin Kuchel stated plans were in place to expand AOL's footprint further into Brisbane and Darwin. During the same interview, Kuchel stated that revenue had increased 360% and turnover was at $27 million AUD. Shortly after, Kuchel was nominated for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the 2012 Australian Central Region.[6]

In 2014, the company announced that it would be relocating to a new $5.2 million AUD headquarters at Regency Park in Adelaide. Around the same time AOL changed its management structure, employing their first Chief Executive, Chris Taylor.[7]

Manufacturing[edit]

Australian Outdoor Living began manufacturing in 2007. During the company's initial stages of manufacturing they focused on blind manufacturing.[1]
