Overview[edit]

Autism Western Cape claims to have a vision to create a society that accepts and freely includes anyone with autism.[2] They believe in educating and empowering individuals diagnosed with autism by creating a support system that assists parents with the information they need to play a role in the early intervention and treatment of their autistic child. They are aided by the help of the Western Cape Government, who assists with occupational, physiotherapy and speech therapy, which also includes social services, clinical psychologist and regional services for Autism Western Cape.[3]

History[edit]

Autism Western Cape, formally known as The Society for Autistic Children, was established in 1967.[4] Parents of autistic children joined forces and founded Vera School for autistic learners, the very first school in the Southern Hemisphere which specifically focussed on learners with autism.[5] The school was taken over by the government and is the oldest of only five autism specific government schools in South Africa.[6] Then, in 2003, The Society for Autistic Children changed not only changed its name to Autism Western Cape, but also their focus and strategy. Their sole focus was aimed at meeting the increasing need for awareness, providing capacity building for parents and caregivers, as well as the need for extending their social service intervention.
