Auwal Farouk Abdussalam is an Associate Professor of Applied Metereology/Climatology at the Department of Geography [1] and the Director, Admissions, Examinations and Records office at Kaduna State University.[2] and a fellow at KAICIID Dialogue Centre and a Trustee of Jaiz Orphans and Widows Initiative.[3]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Abdussalam was born in Zaria, Kaduna State of Nigeria. He had his primary and secondary education in Zaria, Kaduna. In 1995, he gained admission to study BSc Geography from Bayero University Kano. After eight years, he took Master of Science in Geography from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, graduating in 2007. He briefly worked with Zamfara College of Education before joining Kaduna State University in 2008. Between 2011 and 2014, he pursued Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Metereology and Climatology from the University of Birmingham.[4]

Academic Career[edit]

He began his career as a lecturer at Zamfara College of Arts and Science from 2001 to 2008. In 2008, he joined Kaduna State University as a Faculty Member.[5] He is a Visiting Fellow (Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences) at University of Birmingham. In 2019, he received a Fellowship on Adapting to Climate Change – Wise Water Management for Urban and Rural Resilience (Netherlands Government - NUFFIC) from Wageningen University & Research.[6]

He is a member of European Geosciences Union, American Meteorological Society, Nigerian Environmental Society, Nigerian Meteorological Society and Association of Nigerian Geographers.[7] [8]

Inter-Religious Dialogue and Mediation[edit]

Dr. Abdussalam has a track record in the area of Inter- and Intra- Religious Dialogue (IRD). [9] He is the representative of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) as a member of the Central Coordinating Council (CCC) in the Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace (IDFP) which is supported by KAICIID in Nigeria.[10] Abdussalam started IRD during his undergraduate studies, and since then has worked with several Islamic organisations such as the Joint Youth Islamic Organisation (JYIO), the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) and Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI). He has also participated in numerous projects in the area of inter- and intrareligious dialogue, conflict management, advocacy campaigns and capacity building.[10][11]

Based on study findings, he suggested future temperature increases due to climate change have the potential to significantly increase meningitis cases in both the early (2020–35) and late (2060–75) twenty-first century.[12] He developed and validated suites of regional statistical models capable of explaining and predicting meningitis and cholera in Nigeria, West Africa.
