Avalon no Kagi^[1] is an arcade game developed by Hitmaker and published by Sega on the Triforce arcade board. It combines a sugoroku-style board game and a combat trading card game. It was followed by sequels The Key of Avalon 2: Eutaxy Commandment and The Key of Avalon 2.5: War of the Key.^[2]^[3]

The game allows multiple players to join and leave at any time, using a free in and free out method. Each player uses a deck of up to 30 cards read by the cabinet.^[4] It was often compared to Culdcept.^[5]

Gameplay[edit]

Players start by buying a starter deck from a vending machine for JP¥1000. The game costs JP¥300 per session and lasts about 20 minutes. Players insert an IC card with personalized info and the deck into a card reader.

On the board, players are assigned roles: the Holder with the key and up to three Chasers. The Holder aims to visit 3 out of 4 towers to open the gate to the main castle. Defeating the Holder transfers the key and reverses roles.

The deck includes monster cards, monster support cards, and character support cards, each with different movement, attack, and defense values. Cards have rarity levels, and decks can't have more than three of the same card.

Characters move using monster cards, with movement distance depending on the card's value, color, and character position. The game has Holder and Chaser phases, with the Holder moving and attacking alone, while Chasers race in real-time to initiate battles.

Players can move, attack, or defend using six cards. Winning battles requires a higher attack value than the opponent's defense value. Players gain life by winning battles and passing checkpoints. After each match, players receive a single card, with up to three cards for maximum credits.^[6]^[7]

Development[edit]

Initially, the game was hard to convey to arcade owners due to its focus on cards. Highlighting the board game aspect made it more appealing. The game's art appealed to females and doujinshi artists, attracting a different customer base.^[8]

Reception[edit]

Avalon no Kagi was one of Sega's most successful arcade games in 2003, alongside Dragon Treasure.^[16] Its popularity decreased after the release of Quest of D and Sangokushi Taisen, which had online features that Avalon no Kagi lacked.^[17]
