Avatar Studios is an American production company and a division of Nickelodeon launched by the parent company in 2021 for the purpose of creating productions set in the Avatar universe. The studio is headed by Avatar franchise creators and executive producers Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

History[edit]

In 2020, Nickelodeon licensed the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender, and it's sequel The Legend of Korra to the streaming service Netflix.[2][3] Both series performed well, which led to a new relationship between the cable channel and series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.[4] In February 2021, Nickelodeon announced the creation of Avatar Studios, a division created to develop further original animated content based on their Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise. DiMartino and Konietzko were brought on board as co-chief creative officers, and an animated theatrical film was set to start production in 2021 as the studio's first release.[1] In August 2021, Brian Robbins, the president of Nickelodeon, said that the studio is "well on their way in development on a series of CG films and a new Avatar series."[5] By January 2022, Migizi Pensoneau joined the studio as a consultant on Native American representation.[6] In June 2022, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it was confirmed that the studio was developing two additional animated theatrical films.[7][8]

Production and development process[edit]

Avatar Studios will make use of an animation style combining hand-drawn with CG animation on its projects.[9] Though the studio originally considered using stylized CGI, they ultimately decided to use hand-drawn animation and later "enhance it" with modern animation technology.[10] Projects will vary in art style, tone, and target demographics.[11]

According to DiMartino and Koneitzo, there currently no plans for projects based on Avatar novels or comic books, througth they did noted the expanded material is considered "mostly canon" and that they would retcon certain elements when necessary.[10]

Production library[edit]

According to DiMartino and Konietzko, the studio has a "multi-tatered plan" across multiple media, including films, animated series, novels, and graphic novels, that will explore the world of Avatar througth different ages.[11]

Films[edit]

All the films are distributed by Paramount Pictures.
