The untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender related film is an upcoming American animated film directed by Lauren Montgomery. It serves as a continuation of the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender that originally aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008, as well as the first production of Avatar Studios.

The film was announced in February 2021, along with the formation of Avatar Studios, a new division of Nickelodeon dedicated to the creation of projects based on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra (2012–14). The series' creators and executive producers, Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, were put in co-chief creative officer roles. By June 2022, Montgomery, who was a former storyboard artist on Avatar and a supervising producer for Korra, was hired to direct the film. Konietzko and DiMartino produced the film alongside Avatar: The Last Airbender executive producer Eric Coleman.

The film is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on October 10, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

On February 24, 2021, ViacomCBS announced during its annual Investor Day the formation of Avatar Studios, a new division of Nickelodeon dedicated to the creation of projects based on animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–08) and The Legend of Korra (2012–14). The series creators and executive producers Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino would serve as co-chief creative officers. It was also announced that the studio's first project is an animated theatrical film that would begin production later in 2021.[1][2] In June 2022, it was announced that Lauren Montgomery, a former storyboard artist on Avatar and a supervising producer for Korra, would serve as director. Konietzko and DiMartino will serve as producers alongside Avatar: The Last Airbender executive producer Eric Coleman.[3] In July that same year, Janet Varney, the voice of Korra, revealed that the plot of the movie will revolve around Aang and his friends.[4][5]

A sneak peak of the film was revealed at Paramount Pictures' CinemaCon presentation in April 2023, confirming that the film would follow The Last Airbender's cast in their young adulthood.[6][7]

Animation[edit]

In October 2022, it was reported that Flying Bark Productions in Sydney, Australia, will provide animation for the film. The film will combine hand-drawn animation with CG elements. Alexia Gates-Foale, director of production for Flying Bark, said that working on the film will be "a dream project" for the studio due to multiple employees being fans of the franchise.[8]

Release[edit]

The film is set for theatrical release on October 10, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.[9]
