History:
Avon Cycles Ltd was established in 1951 in Ludhiana, and the first batch of 250 bicycles was rolled out of the plant in the year 1952. The beginnings were humble – a classic example of the enterprising Punjabi spirit.
In the early days of the country’s independence, post-partition in 1947, the Pahwa Brothers dreamt of providing the common man with an affordable means of mobility. They started with the manufacture of bicycle saddles and brakes in 1948 and worked towards higher goals with no looking back. The business was incorporated in 1951 and started producing bicycles under the brand name Avon Cycles. In 1997, the family business became reorganised. Over the years, the business expanded.
Today, Avon manufactures more than 200 different models of bicycles across MTB, Young Trainers, Kids, Ladies and Roadster segments that embody luxury, style & freedom catering to all age groups. In order to cater to the emerging urban customer, Avon has launched its mass premium segment by the name of Cyclux and a series of electric bicycles, CYCLELEC, with its first two models being CONNECT I and CONNECT II.[5][6][7][8]
Manufacturing Facility:
Avon has three manufacturing plants in India, with two located in the bustling business city of Ludhiana on the main GT Road. One plant is located in Hazipur, Bihar in order to cater to the Eastern markets. Avon is commissioning its fourth manufacturing facility at Neelon (near Ludhiana) with the capacity of 5000 bicycles per day, in addition to the current production of 10000 bicycles daily. The company infused 12.5 million euros to increase capacity, which enabled the production of 15,000 bicycles per day.[9][10]
Avon Cycles is the third largest player in the bicycle industry, accounting for 90 percent of bike sales on the subcontinent. The plant has the capacity to produce 10,000 units per day.[11]
There is a well-established network of about 1,600 AVON authorised dealers in cities and towns of India and a dedicated resource of more than 12,000 sub-dealers that support the operations of the dealership.[12]
