Awais Ahmed (born 23 October 1997) is the founder and CEO of Pixxel, a space-technology start-up which aims to put a constellation of more than 30 earth observation micro-satellites into a sun-synchronous orbit.[1][2] He started Pixxel in 2019 while still studying at BITS Pilani.[3][4] He was one of the recipients of the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 award in 2021.[5]
Early life[edit]
Awais Ahmed was born and brought up in the small village of Aldur in Karnataka, India.[6] He went on to study at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India where he started Pixxel during his final year of studies. He graduated with a Masters in Mathematics in 2019.[7]
Career[edit]
Student Satellite Team[edit]
While studying at BITS Pilani, Awais was a member of Team Anant, the student satellite team of BITS Pilani which worked with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as part of its student satellite program.[8]
Hyperloop India[edit]
Awais was one of the founding team members and engineering lead at Hyperloop India, a team that was a finalist at the 2017 SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition and built India's first working hyperloop pod prototype.[9]
Pixxel[edit]
In early 2019, Awais started Pixxel with cofounder Kshitij Khandelwal, which has since raised $8 million in funding for its plan of a global satellite imaging constellation from Lightspeed, Techstars and others.[10]
