Awale Olad ([Cawaale Awlad] error: {{lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help), Arabic: عوالي أولاد‎) is a Somali-British politician. He is a former Chairman of the Somali Youth Development Resource Centre. In May 2010, Olad was elected as a Labour Party Councillor representing the Holborn and Covent Garden ward in Camden.

Personal life[edit]

Olad was born in Somalia. He later emigrated to the United Kingdom.[1]

Olad attended the William Ellis Secondary School in Highgate, London.[2] For his post-secondary studies, he earned an MA in European Studies from King's College London.[3]

He resides in Holborn.[2]

Career[edit]

Somali Youth Development Resource Centre[edit]

From 2007 to 2009, Olad was the Chairman of the Somali Youth Development Resource Centre.[4][5] The organization annually holds an honours event to reward high-achieving Somali pupils.[6] Olad concurrently worked as a parliamentary researcher.[4]

General[edit]

Olad served as the Secretary of the Brooke's Court Tenants and Residents Association, where he led a reform initiative.[2] Between 2007 and 2010, he worked as a Parliamentary Assistant/Researcher to the Justice Minister. He later acted as a backbench MP.[3][7]

Additionally, Olad is a Public & Parliamentary Affairs Officer at the Migrants Rights Network, where he coordinates the work of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Migration.[7]

Olad also serves as the Chair of 8th Holborn, a Scout Group established over 100 years ago.[8]

Councillor for Holborn and Covent Garden[edit]

In November 2008, Olad ran for Councillor in the Camden municipal elections under a Labour Party ticket. He lost out to Nick Russell, who secured a winning margin of 76 votes.[9]

In May 2010, Olad ran again for the municipal council seat. He earned 1,784 of votes or 12.78% of the ballot, becoming the Labour Party Ward Councillor for Camden's Holborn and Covent Garden neighbourhood.[10] The win makes him the borough's first Somali councillor.[11] Olad serves in this capacity as the Chair of the Culture and Environment Scrutiny Committee.[12]
