Esau Geoffrey Williams is a civil servant, journalist, and broadcaster.[1][2]

Education

Esau Williams is a graduate of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas (BA, Philosophy); Royal Holloway, University of London (BA (Hons), Politics with Philosophy); and King's College London (MA, International Political Economy).

Career

Williams is a former presenter of Focus on Africa, the BBC World Service's flagship news and current affairs radio programme.[3][4][5]

He anchored a special series of guest-edited Focus on Africa programmes featuring prominent Africans, including Professor Thuli Madonsela, law professor and the first female Public Protector of South Africa.[6]

In 2021, he was sent to cover the Gambian presidential election for the BBC,[7][8] where he interviewed Ghana's then former president, John Mahama who was in The Gambia as an election observer at the time.

Williams is an expert on the politics of The Gambia[9] and has written and commented on the subject for the BBC.[10][11]

He has also interviewed the former British prime minister Sir Tony Blair on the BBC World Service in 2021 about the challenges facing Africa caused by the Delta variant of the Corona Virus, and Sir Tony’s advocacy for an increase in the availability of COVID vaccines to the continent.[12]

He occasionally writes opinion pieces on British politics for the History News Network at George Washington University;[13] Inside Sources;[14] and the SMU Blog.[15]

Williams trains journalists at the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication in The Gambia,[16][17][18] and twice served as chair of the panel of judges for the National Journalism Awards in The Gambia.[19][20]

In the autumn of 2024, he was appointed as the new host of the podcast, WORLD: we got this with Esau Williams,[2] produced by the School of Global Affairs at King's College London.[21]

Awards

Williams presented the daily News About Ebola programme[22] which won a Peabody Award for the BBC World Service for coverage of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa.[23]
