Ayumu Kasuga (春日 歩), more commonly known by her nickname Osaka (大阪), is a fictional character and a main character in the manga and anime Azumanga Daioh, first appearing in 1999. She is voiced in Japaness by Yuki Matsuoka, and in the English by Kira Vincent-Davis.[1] In the English adaptation of the anime, she is given a distinct Houston accent.[2]
She also makes a brief cameo in Yotsuba&! after the events of the original story. She is called Osaka because she came from Osaka. Ayumu Kasuga is one of the most famous characters in Azumanga Daioh, and became one of the most famous airheads characters in anime,[3][4] and one of the most famous anime characters in the internet memes.
Appearance in manga and anime
In the manga, she first appears as a transfer student from Osaka Prefecture,[5] joining the classroom where the other main characters attend high school. In the anime adaptation, she is prominently featured throughout the everyday school life setting, taking part in comedic interactions and group activities.
The manga also revealed that she actually likes to run outside and play in typhoons,[6] yet is easily spooked by thunder.[7] And in the manga, Osaka mentions that she lived in Kobe when she was in elementary school and was born in Wakayama.[8]
She suffers from hay fever and sneezes with the sound "Hee-cho", however this was cut from the anime except for the final scene.
In her earliest incarnation, Osaka first appeared in Azumanga Web Daioh (2000), a short film and published online. Osaka buries the video she and her friends recorded in the schoolyard and puts up a sign next to it saying "time capsule", she peacefully walks away from there after that. Then the waste management company comes and brings down the tree by which Osaka's time capsule was placed, Osaka appears stunned as she soon realizes what is happening.
Osaka is depicted as a poor student academically—she often dozes off during lessons or spaces out in class—which sometimes frustrates her homeroom teacher Yukari Tanizaki. Her athletic abilities are also portrayed as among the weakest in her class, and she frequently loses in sports activities, sometimes even to the much younger Chiyo Mihama, She has almost no flexibility in her body; when stretching as a warm-up exercise, she cannot bend at all. She is easily amused by things that most people would consider bizarre. During the Sports Festival, she made a big deal out of running the obstacle course because she thought the event of sticking her face in flour to get a piece of candy was funny and had a giggle fit when she got there. Additionally, when participating in a bread-eating race, her concentration was trounced when the commentator listed the flavour of breads available, causing her to spend too much time deliberating which flavour to pick and, hence, coming in last. She graduates high school at the end of the series.
In Azumanga Daioh: The Very Short Movie, Osaka with Tomo and Kagura compare their scores with hers: Tomo got 31, and Osaka got 42, and Kagura got 30, making their combined score 103 points. They announce to Chiyo that the Knuckleheads have won. Osaka is sitting in the classroom, fascinated by Chiyo-chan's pigtails, and holds her hands out to touch them. But the next thing she knows, the pigtails fall off Chiyo's head. The whole class is watching as Osaka tries to put Chiyo's pigtails back on, but fails to do so. Osaka finds Chiyo's pigtails under the desks, but when she tries to take them, they jump away and out the window. Chiyo follows them and Osaka begins imagining a scenario where Chiyo travels across the world in search of her pigtails. Osaka wakes up to find that it was all just a dream, and her classmates are standing all around her, giving her confused looks. Yukari in particular is furious with Osaka for sleeping in class.
In Yotsuba&!, it is hinted that Osaka is an adult, and eventually became a physical education teacher after graduation.[9][10]
Personality, traits and mannerisms
Osaka is portrayed as quiet, contemplative, and often absent-minded, appearing as if she is “lost in her own world.” Much of her humor stems from her tendency to make non-sequitur remarks, jumping from one topic to another without any clear logical connection.
Despite this, she possesses a vivid imagination and, on occasion, a surprising ability to notice details or reach conclusions that other characters miss. She has an ability to solve the puzzles.
Her demeanor is generally calm and laid-back; she rarely shows anger or strong enthusiasm.
She is very close to Chiyo, because although they are intellectually very different, they are both bad at Physical Education[11] and both seem to face the world with the same touch of curiosity and childlike wonder (although Chiyo generally relies on common sense and information, Osaka does not).
Another recurring trait is her tendency to focus so intently on a single thought that she becomes oblivious to her surroundings. She also has a fascination with odd or humorous things, one of her most cherished fantasies is to fly using Chiyo-chan's hair ribbons.[12]
Her nickname “Osaka” originates from a joke made by her classmate Tomo Takino, who expected her to act like a stereotypical Osakan. Although Ayumu herself never strongly objected to the nickname, it quickly replaced her real name; eventually, almost everyone—including her teachers—refers to her only as Osaka.
Reception
Osaka became one of the most recognizable characters from Azumanga Daioh, and her slow-paced, whimsical behavior made her a fan favorite. Critics and viewers often highlight her non-sequitur remarks and daydreaming as some of the series’ most comedic moments.
Osaka gained considerable popularity in online culture.[13] Her distinctive expressions and quotes—such as her confused reactions or the way she blurts out “Oh my God!” and "America yahhh" have frequently been shared as memes.[14][15] She has also appeared in numerous fan works, parodies, and internet image macros, contributing to her status as a widely recognized “cult character” from early-2000s, especially in 2020s.
In addition, the original author drew a series of paintings of her playing Gundam at the C3 (Cultural Convention of Characters) exhibition in 2002 as part of the "One Year War After School" exhibition. Osaka also won the runner-up title in the Japanese Moe Contest (Moe War) that same year.[16]
In 2012, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the publishing house, ASCII Media Works decided to release model figures of heroines from 20 works produced by the company over the years, including Osaka.[17]
Four of the girls from Azumanga Daioh were included in Newtype's top 100 anime heroines of 2002: Osaka was awarded 7th, Chiyo 11th, Sakaki 21st, and Yomi 78th. Together, they made Azumanga Daioh the second most popular series of 2002 for female characters.[18]
