Azadeh Etehad (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is an Iranian musician and singer of Rock and Pop. She is also known as a translator, journalist and actress.[1] .[2] .[3] [4][5]
Career
Etehad was born into a musical family in Sari. Her father and great-uncle, Hamid and Mahmoud Etehad, were active vocalists at the city’s Youth Center. Her father’s professional musical activities came to an end following the 1979 Revolution, after which a home-based musical culture emerged—an environment that coincided with her childhood. During these years, she observed her father and his musical circle, including musician and composer Hamid Panahi, performing in domestic gatherings and private events. With the gradual reopening of Iran’s music scene in the 1990s, the group resumed their collaborations and held several concerts, many of them charity performances.
Although raised in a musical household, Etehad pursued a degree in English Translation Studies, as women in Iran are prohibited from performing as solo vocalists. She had, however, begun singing before she could speak and has continued to sing throughout her life. After graduating in the late 2000s, she joined Tehran’s underground music scene, collaborating with musicians including Kaveh Afagh, Hooman Ajdari and Pedram Azad. She released several English-language covers, performed as a backing vocalist with Ajdari, and worked as both a backing and solo vocalist with the underground band Accolade,[6]appearing on the track “Ninoochka” from their album Haft Joft Kafsh-o Haft Kolah-e Ahani. Her first single, “Bi Molawi,” composed by Kia Kalhor and arranged by Kaveh Afagh, was released in 2014 on Radio Javan[7] and other platforms.
Etehad subsequently paused her musical career and worked as a journalist and translator. Beginning in 2010, she contributed to the newspaper Haft-e Sobh and later wrote and translated for publications such as Iran, Forsat-e Emrooz, Hamshahri and Sarnekh, focusing on international affairs, culture, literature and the arts. In the mid-2010s, she trained in theatre acting with Mahtab Nasirpour and Mohammad Yaghoubi and appeared in several stage and on-camera projects, including serving as a singer-actor in Mohammad Rahmanian’s staged reading Shab-e Sal-e No.
Her first translated book, Walker Percy’s The Moviegoer[8] was published in 2019 by Khezeh Publications, followed by translations including bell hooks’ All About Love and Katherine Johnson. She returned to music in 2022 with a cover of “Mashti Mashallah” by Fereydoun Foroughi—a previously unfinished project recorded a decade earlier with Afagh and Ajdari—and later released “Bahar” (2023), composed by Hamid Panahi and based on a nostalgic children’s song. Since then, she has performed several solo concerts with musician Reza Rostamian and is currently focusing on original material.
