YARA is a four-member Filipino girl group, an independent and self-produced group formerly trained under ShowBT Philippines. The group consists of Rocher, Gelou, Christa, and Kim.[1] They are the first-ever Grand Girl Group P-Pop Stars of PoPinoy, a Philippine reality survival show in TV5 Network. During the competition, YARA was called the "Tiara of PPOP". They swept and dominated the girl groups in the finals of the competition with their first own composition entitled "PARA".[2] The group officially debuted on March 10, 2023, with their debut single "ADDA".[3]

Name

Group name

The name YARA is of Arabic origin and means 'butterfly'. Carefree and graceful, we see ourselves as a butterfly – one that has a pure spirit and can give hope to everyone. The group name comes from the initials of the original members' names: Yuki (former member), Angelou (Gelou), Rocher, and Angelah (former member).

Fandom name

Fans of YARA are known as "CoCoon(s)". Scientifically, a cocoon plays a vital part for butterflies to develop. It protects the pupa throughout the process, a metaphor to the fact that YARA, as an Arabic word, means butterfly.[4]

History

2017–2021: Pre-debut

The members were former trainees of ShowBT Philippines, a Philippine-based entertainment agency that formed and manages P-Pop groups SB19 and KAIA. YARA joined the 2017 Pinoy K-Pop Star (PKS), the annual Philippine finals leg of the K-POP World Festival, as part of their evaluation as trainees. It was their first debut stage as a four-member group.

They became part of the trainee group called NARRA under ShowBT, a musical gala team that was initially trained as performers only on the company's events and activities, and as backup dancers in a musical show.

In 2017, Kim and Christa later joined the company as idol trainees. The company decided to create an idol group. However, due to some difficulties, they opted to focus on the boy group. In 2018, they left ShowBT by mutual decision. With that, Kim and Christa focused on their studies while Rocher, Gelou, and Yuki focused on their careers. They were able to perform in SB19’s previous events such as GITZ: Manila Concert, School Attack at PUP Manila and Dunkin’ Presents: Give In to SB19, but the latter was postponed due to the pandemic.[5]

In 2019, original group members Yuki, Gelou, and Rocher, along with new members Christa and Kim, reunited and decided to take another shot in Pinoy K-Pop Star (PKS) 2019. They decided to retain the group’s name YARA even after the introduction of Christa and Kim. YARA won as the second runner-up for the "Performance Category" after performing the double standards-breaker hit debut song “Dalla Dalla” of K-pop group ITZY.[6]

Thereafter, they became active as a dance cover group, up until June 2021. They decided to join PoPinoy: The Search for the Next-Gen P-Pop Stars as a four-member group, broadcast on TV5 Network. YARA became the first-ever Grand Girl Group PPop Stars in the competition. That year, Yuki decided to leave the group for personal reasons.[7]

2021–2023: POPinoy journey and debut with "ADDA"

On November 7, 2021, the group won as the first season Grand Winner of POPinoy in the Girl Group category.[8] They swept and dominated the girl groups in the finals of the competition with their first own composition entitled ‘PARA’, garnering an average score of 96.50. A year later, on the same date, they released their pre-debut Music Video for "PARA".

On July 15, 2022, the group took part in the "TUGATOG: The Filipino Music Festival 2022" alongside other Filipino idol groups.[9]

On January 5, 2023, YARA began hinting at their upcoming debut with the Code 10-98 concept. After several weeks of releasing concept trailers, on February 8, 2023, they finally revealed their debut single, "ADDA", set to be released on March 3, 2023, but later moved to March 10, 2023.[10]

YARA officially marked their debut as a recording artist with the release of their new single “ADDA,” which means ‘Apat Dapat, Dapat Apat.’ Holding merit with a refreshing balance of charisma and edginess, YARA dropped a confident piece of pop music that leaves nothing out. The melody reflects why YARA endeavors to go past their restrictions and reach for their fantasies. YARA believes that their audience should know their story and draw strength from it to vanquish their own feelings of dread and learn from YARA's experiences. YARA believes that their audience members should take command over their own lives and dreams.[11]

Consolidating dance-pop force with hip-hop elements and K-Pop scrappiness, YARA's "ADDA" was composed and created by YARA Kim Natividad, and produced by SB19 member Pablo's brother Joshua Nase and Michael "Cursebox" Negapatan (Alex Bruce).[12]

““The dynamics of the song radiate confidence and empower our listeners. Unison is also present in the song to highlight that behind showcasing our individual talents, the product of our teamwork sets us apart and makes us who we are. The progression of instrumental placements in the song relates to how our passion (to perform) intensifies throughout our journey amidst the unexpected challenges we’ve encountered along the way."
