The Azerbaijani people are a Turkic ethnic group, whose origins are in the Caucasus and West Asia. The region of Iran, generally Iranian Azerbaijan, the Caucasus, generally Azerbaijan, Borchali and Dagestan, and Anatolia, generally Iğdır and Kars, is the original geographic region of the Azerbaijani people and the home to the majority of Azerbaijanis today. This geo-cultural region means "Land of the Azerbaijanis". A space was carved out to develop Azerbaijani culture, Azerbaijani language, Azerbaijani art, Azerbaijani literature, Azerbaijani folklore, Music of Azerbaijan|Azerbaijani music, Azerbaijani dances, Azerbaijani Traditional dress, Azerbaijani cuisine and Azerbaijani identity.

Iran

According to a report by Ethnologue, in 2013, out of the total population of 70,496,000 people in Iran[1] there were 15.5 million Azerbaijanis living in Iran[2] (more than 20% of the total population). New America Foundation has reported in 2009 that the Azerbaijani population in Iran is 21.6%.[3] According to the World Factbook[4] and Library of Congress,[5] Azerbaijani people make up 16% of Iran's population (about 12–13 million, out of 77 million people). The online encyclopaedia of writing systems & languages reports that the South Azerbaijani variety has about 16.9 million speakers, mainly in the northwest of Iran, and also in parts of Iraq and Turkey, and in Afghanistan and Syria.[6]

Azerbaijanis mostly live in the west and northwest parts of Iran. But large Azerbaijani populations can be found in central Iran due to internal migration. Azerbaijanis make up 25%[7] of Tehran's population and 30.3%[8] – 33%[9][10] of the population of the Tehran Province. Azerbaijanis in Tehran live in all of the cities of Tehran Province.[11] They are the largest ethnic group after Persians in Tehran and the Tehran Province.[12][13] There are Iranian Azerbaijanis with Khorasani Turks living in the Khorasan Province area; some Azerbaijanis have emigrated to Khorasan.[14]

Republic of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijanis make up the majority of Azerbaijan. The ethnic composition of the population according to the 2009 population census: 91.6% of the population in the Republic of Azerbaijan are Azerbaijanis.[15] According to the World Factbook, Azerbaijani people make up 90.6% of Azerbaijan's population in 1999.[16] According to the statistics presented by the World Bank Data, the total number of Azerbaijani population in 2017 was 9,862.430 million people.

Dagestan

Azerbaijanis of Dagestan are an Azerbaijani branch of the indigenous peoples of the Dagestan Republic.[17][18] Based on the latest census of the Russian Federation in 2010, 130,919 Azeris live in Dagestan.[19] This makes them the region's sixth largest ethnic group and 4.5% of its total population.[20]

Borchali

Borchali is a region of Georgia largely populated by ethnic Azerbaijanis. It is the historical name of present-day Kvemo Kartli. In 2002, the Kvemo Kartli province of Georgia had the following ethnic makeup of 497,530 total population, and 45.1% are Azerbaijanis.[21]

Iğdır and Kars

Azerbaijanis native to Turkey live in Iğdır and the Kars Province from the Eastern Anatolia Region. By 1990, about 400,000 Azerbaijanis lived in a belt of land on the Turkish side of the Soviet border.[22] They are currently the largest ethnic group in the city of Iğdır[23] and the second largest ethnic group in Kars Province.[24]
