BASICS Essex Accident Rescue Service (BEARS)[1] is an emergency medical charity that provides pre-hospital care by land to patients in life-threatening emergencies in the Essex. The charity is based in Chelmsford and is activated to serious medical incidents, using an enhanced care car or volunteer's own vehicles.

It trains, equips and deploys doctors and paramedics team to any medical emergency, illness or accident where the East of England Ambulance Service asks for on-scene medical support.[2]

The medical team receives enhanced training which allows them to offer procedures and treatments at the scene, like general anaesthetic, which are usually only available in a hospital. The charity is not a state-funded service and relies on public donations.[3]

History[edit]

BEARS was formed in June 2011 following the merger of North East Essex Doctors Emergency Service (NEEDES) and Mid Essex Doctors Immediate Care Scheme (MEDICS). NEEDES and MEDICS have provided Immediate Medical Care at the roadside in Essex since 1976.[4]

Medical Team[edit]

BEARS are a group of Doctors and Critical Care (Advanced) Paramedics with additional training who respond voluntarily to provide advanced pre-hospital care to those that need it.

Pre-hospital Care Network in the East of England[edit]

This charity is one of many Pre-hospital care providers in the East, which has an established trauma network - the first to be fully operational in the UK.

Other Pre-hospital care providers that they works and trains alongside are:

BASICS Hertfordshire [1]

Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (NARS)

Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS)

Magpas Air Ambulance

East Anglian Air Ambulance

Essex & Herts Air Ambulance

The doctors and paramedics of these teams commonly end up working alongside crews from Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, London's Air Ambulance and The Air Ambulance Service, along with other BASICS charities.
