BHS-Sonthofen, based in Sonthofen, Germany, is a mid-sized company active in the field of machinery manufacturing and plant engineering. The origins of the company trace back to the early 17th century. The company addresses several business segments and serves customers operating in various industries across the globe.[1]
Corporate History[edit]
The company site was first mentioned in a deed for an iron-smelting works issued in 1607. The works produced wrought iron from iron ore mined in the region. Following the German mediatization the Kingdom of Bavaria took over ownership of the works from the Prince-bishop in 1803. In the second half of the 19th century, the company expanded its operations to include mechanical engineering, which soon became its core activity. Back then, the first concrete mixers and crushers for rock processing applications were produced. The company was named ′Royal Bavarian Smelting Works Sonthofen′ until the end of WWI. Upon the founding of the Free State of Bavaria, the smelting works was merged into the newly formed ′BHS-Bayerische Berg-, Hütten- und Salzwerke AG′, a Munich-based state-owned enterprise comprising mining, smelting, machinery and salt works in Bavaria. The site grew over the course of the 20th century, adding various new mechanical engineering sectors to the business portfolio. In 1996, BHS-Sonthofen became a privatly owned company and has retained this corporate structure until the present day. Since then, business activities have expanded considerably. The export rate has been around the 80% mark since many years.
Business Areas[edit]
The company operates in three mechanical process technology fields:
- Mixing and crushing technology: The product range includes mixers for the construction materials industry, in particular for the production of concrete, as well as crushing systems, notably impact crushers and impact mills, that are used to produce aggregates.[2]
- Filtration technology: The company offers a range of filter systems for solid-liquid separation. These are used for applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, as well as in the environmental sector.[3]
- Recycling technology: The company manufactures a range of comminution machines for processing various waste and scarp materials and also designs and implements complete recycling plants.[1]
Corporate Structure[edit]
About 250 employees work at the company headquarters in Sonthofen, which produces systems for all three business areas. A production facility with a workforce of 100 was established in Tianjin, China, in 2001 to address the Far Eastern markets.[4] There are also regional sales and service offices in the U.S.,[5] India, Russia and Australia. BHS-Sonthofen holds 100% of the shares in all subsidiaries.
