Dr. Michael Biddle is the founder of MBA Polymers, a plastics recycling company[1] that has developed patented technology for recycling plastics from large and complex waste streams.[2] MBA’s recycling process recovers various types of plastics from waste streams all over the world and turns them into raw materials that replace new oil-based plastics.[3] The technology that Biddle has pioneered is providing significant environmental benefits of sustainability by reducing the amount of plastics placed in landfill or incineration, and reducing the amount of waste plastics contaminating at-risk natural resources like oceans.[2]
Education[edit]
Biddle was awarded a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Louisville in 1978, a Ph.D. in macromolecular science (polymer science and engineering) from Case Western Reserve University in 1987 and a masters in management science from Stanford University in 1991 as a Sloan Fellow.[4] Biddle began his career in 1978 at General Electric’s Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky, where he first learned about plastics. He then went to work for Cummins Engine Company as the corporate plastics engineer before deciding to pursue his Ph.D. After receiving his Ph.D, he accepted a position at Dow Chemical's research lab in Walnut Creek, California.[4]
Early career[edit]
When Dow closed its Walnut Creek research lab at the end of 1992, Biddle established the consulting company Michael Biddle & Associates (MB&A) focusing on plastics recycling and sustainability.[4] MB&A received research projects and grants from a variety of companies, organizations and government agencies.
MBA Polymers[edit]
Working with the American Plastics Council, MB&A's projects helped start a plastics recycling demonstration facility in Berkeley, California in 1994. At this point, Biddle decided to work with one of his colleagues, Trip Allen, to form MBA Polymers to operate the facility and expand the technology.[4] The business now operates large-scale industrial plastics recycling plants in the United States, Europe, and China.[3][5] Biddle advocates that society’s one-way use of plastics is unsustainable.[1]
Awards and recognition[edit]
In 2012 Biddle was awarded the Gothenburg Award for Sustainable Development.[3]
