The BM Quizzing Championships (Brain Master Quizzing Championship/ BMQC) is the national general knowledge competition for schools in Northern Ireland, founded by Ben Mooney in 2021[1]. It uses the same quiz bowl rules as University Challenge, although it is affiliated with neither the game nor the television show. The competition is open to all second-level school students.
Competition structure[edit]
The Brain Master Quizzing Championships is for students of secondary school age (11–18 years old).[2] However, a typical team predominantly draws on students aged 16 and over. Each team comprises four members plus a reserve team member. One team maximum may be submitted per school. After registration closes all team’s applications will be considered before they qualify for competing in the competition. The competition usually takes place over the month of October in a centrally located participating school.[3] The competition winners then progress to the UK National Schools Challenge Final representing the Northern Ireland Division.
The BM Quizzing Championships (BMQC) is organised and sponsored by the Brain Master Quizzing Organisation whose decision on all matters relating to the Competition will be final. Ben Mooney has been the head of the BM Quizzing Organisation since its inception and is the chief producer of the competition, assisted by a board of coordinators.
Brain Master Quizzing is a non-profit making, voluntary organisation, offering educational and quiz services in Northern Ireland. The BM Quizzing Championships is currently the largest quizzing competition in Northern Ireland.[4] The competition is affiliated with the UK Schools Challenge as of 2022.[5]
Rules[edit]
The game is played to almost-identical rules to the TV show University Challenge. Starter questions are asked to all contestants and the first to buzz must answer immediately (or the full question is passed to the other team). The team that correctly answers a buzzer question is then asked two 'bonus' questions which they may confer. The main differences between the BM Quizzing Championships and University Challenge are:
- There is two bonus questions rather than three.
- There is no first round repechage.
