BTCPay Server is a free and open-source cryptocurrency payment processor used for receiving payments in Bitcoin as well as altcoins directly, with no fees, transaction costs or interim processors.

    Concept[edit]

Originally launched in August 2017, Nicolas Dorier first announced the project responding to a tweet from Bitpay.[2] [3] Much of the initial motivation for creating BTCPay came from a contentious hard fork of Bitcoin called SegWit2x. BitPay was part of a list[4] of companies that said they would treat Segwit2x as Bitcoin, given enough community consensus. When Bitpay initially came out in support of SegWit2x many users were very angry[5][6][7] with the company for taking a controversial[8] stance within the Bitcoin community[9]

After two months, in a post on Reddit Nicolas Dorier clarified that BTCPay would instead be a new alternative decentralized stand-in replacement for merchants who wanted to accept Bitcoin[10] and not merely a response or attack on Bitpay. Since it's original release[11], BTCPay has continued to add features, videos and tutorials, all from open source contributions.[12] Users are able to run BTCPay as a self-hosted solution, or even use a third-party hosting service. Originally the software was deployed using Microsoft Azure. The software now has many different deployment methods available and can be run as a one-click Docker application.

    Features[edit]

    Lightning Network[edit]

On October 1st, 2017 a Brazilian hacker[13] published a project to Medium about his modified Coca-Cola machine which could accept Bitcoin payments using BTCPay Server to receive Lightning Network payments. The story went on to make international headlines.[14] He had previously experimented with a Bitcoin accepting coffee machine.

    Integrations[edit]

In it's current incarnation BTCPay can be used as a plugin service for WooCommerce, Magento, Drupal, and PrestaShop. It currently supports Lightning Network via Lightning Network Daemon (LND) and c-lightning. Recent lightning integrations include Lighting Charge and Spark Wallet.[15] Any wallet using LND will also be compatible.

    Applications[edit]

In December of 2018, due to increasing controversy surrounding Patreon an alternative services called LibrePatron was launched using BTCPay as its software backend.[16] This software was released on Github as free open source software. January of 2019, BTCPay released it's second application, Crowdfunding (the first being it's Point of Sale Application). This feature continues BTCPay's efforts to provide free, un-censorable payment services to anyone who can access the internet. Other features include embeddable html buttons for websites, paywalls for articles, custom cryptocurrency payment invoices, and data exporting for QuickBooks accounting software.

    Users[edit]

On July 13, 2018 Cheapair.com announced in a blog post that they would be switching away from Coinbase to BTCPay Server after rejecting BitPay as an option.[17] In the post Klee mentions specifically circumventing BitPay's controversial BIP-70 wallet requirement as the main motivation for the move. The original impetus came from Coinbase's decision to end their merchant support services. He ended the post by explaining the company would be launching a dedicated cryptocurrency support team to deal with issues specific to those payment options.

    Contributions[edit]

According to an interview conducted in the beginning of 2019, BTCPay currently has around 1,100 members participating on Slack, as well as around 10k followers on Twitter and 700 GitHub stars. Additionally merchant adoption is somewhere between 2000 to 20,000 users, which is difficult to determine, due to the decentralized nature of the project itself. Lastly, Nicolas Dorier claimed in the interview that an atomic swap feature would be released during the year to bring the platform closer to a full Shapeshift replacement after concerns grew over their KYC policies.[18]
