B M Union School and College is a non-governmental school located in Narayanganj, Bangladesh. It was founded in 1900 by the descendants of a local landowner. The school offers classes from grades 1-12 and is currently managed by a chairman and principal. The school day runs from 10 AM to 5 PM and Bengali is the primary language of instruction.

History[edit]

In the year 1900, in the Sonakanda Mouza of Narayanganj district, where the water purification plant currently stands, a government-aided English high school was established named "B M Union High School". It was named so to signify its establishment for the students of Bandar and Madanaganga Union. The school was founded by Zamindar Hari Mohan Sen and some honorable persons of Bandar and Madanaganga Union. Probably due to English education and local political leadership, in 1921, the school building was vandalized by a group of miscreants, leading to the suspension of its educational activities. Considering the need for a safe and convenient location for the school, most of the local residents, the school's managing committee, the sub-divisional officer of Narayanganj, and inspectors of schools in Dhaka District preferred the ownership of a new land. Consequently, the school committee secretary and on behalf of the school committee without any salary deposited the ownership of the land to prevent the aforementioned misfortune. On 15/12/1328 Bengali, 30/03/1922 English, the designated Zamindar of Bandar, Shri Digendra Mohan Sen Roy, Shri Surendra Mohan Sen Roy, Shri Sachindra Mohan Sen Roy, sons of late Revati Mohan Sen Roy agreed to donate the land for the school's commemoration. In order to preserve their memory, the inscription "Established in our favor, school was founded on this land" in English (Land attained by courtesy of Babu D. M. Sen Roy) will be engraved on the school building and a portrait of the late Hari Mohan Sen Roy along with a stone plaque, and a marble statue prepared at their own expense will be erected in the school library. The school library, meaning the school-associated library, will be established in the name of the donor Shri Digendra Mohan Sen Roy. God forbid if for any reason the aforementioned high school collapses or relocates and no other high school is established on the land, the consent and grant provided by the grantors will be deemed null and void. If the school is converted into a college, then one consent and grant shall remain valid, subject to additional conditions. The grantors were Pir Mohammad, son of late Gul Mohammad Haji Sang- Madanaganga, Police station- Sonakanda, District- Dhaka, Nationality-Muslim, Business-trader, and Landlord. In this grant, they donated 68 decimal or two bighas of land from the portion of Dag No. 252 of 240 Gangakul Bandar Mouza, 247 of Dag No. 37, 245 of Dag No. 44, and 243 Dag No. to this four-sided land. The grantors' paternal grandmother, the late Kali Tara Chaudhurani Malik, having been in the possession of the land, transferred to the realm of the departed upon her demise, and their inheritable rights were legally granted to Malik Dakhal Karini through a separate litigation in the English 51st Bawar Court of Dhaka in 1896. With financial assistance, a tin school building was constructed. Consequently, in 1922, the school was re-established and educational activities resumed at this site. The school obtained permanent recognition from the University of Calcutta before 1931. The name of the school was listed as Bandar B M Institution in the list of permanently recognized schools by the University. This list has been amended until December 1931. Therefore, the school had obtained permanent recognition from the University of Calcutta before 1931. On January 8, 1947, the inauguration of the first single-story school building was done by Mr. H.M. Sikdar, the then chairman of Narayanganj Municipality. In 1947, the school received approval from the University of Dhaka and subsequently from the Dhaka Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education for the establishment of college education. Then between 2005 and 2016, the governing body acquired 29.41 decimals of the land at a cost of two crore taka. In 2013, the college branch was initiated and named B M Union School and College, with college code no. 2529. The college education program started from the academic year 2013-2014. In the same session, the college received permission from the Ministry of Education and approval from the Dhaka Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education. In 2018, the governing body purchased 32 decimals of the land adjacent to the Bandar Police Fari Road for two crore taka. There, the primary branch (from playgroup to class 5) started in the academic year 2019. In 2020, for the convenience of branch expansion, the single-story building was expanded and upgraded to four floors. Since then, the number of student branches has decreased, and five class branches have been added.
