Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) is a Thai-registered NGO based in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Founded in 2002, Baan Dek Foundation provides children's access to essential services and in educationhealth, and safety.[1] Baan Dek Foundation was founded by Nicola Crosta, Executive Director of Epic Foundation and Founder of Baan Dek Foundation, Acha Sripurya, Chairwoman, and Magali Crosta, Executive Director and Co-Founder. Baan Dek Foundation is a part of the Kids Home Development Network, a network of charitable entities in: US, UK, Italy and France providing fundraising and strategic support to the Foundation's activities on the field. In 2017, 1,349 children in total were supported, and 98% of school-age kids enrolled in local Thai public schools.

Baan Dek Foundation received the MIT Solve award in the Youth, Skills and the Workforce of the Future Challenge in 2017.[2] In 2018, BDF partnered with MIT Solve and Australian Department of Foreign Affairs for the Digital Superheroes Academy (DSHA)[3], providing essential life skills in the region through a digital interactive web-based application. Baan Dek Foundation launched a joint research publication with UNICEF, in March 2018, entitled 'Building Futures in Thailand: Support to Children Living in Construction Site Camps', highlighting the many problems that migrant children face[4] in the Thai construction sector and a 12-step framework for action.[5] The report highlights 4 key challenges affecting migrant children in construction site camps: health, infrastructure, rights, and education.[6]

Programs[edit]

Individual Support Program[edit]

Baan Dek Foundation's Individual Support Program (ISP) provides one-on-one, in-depth assistance to families and children in particularly challenging situations located in construction site camps and slums in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Individual support is provided through identification on the field followed by tailored case management.

Blueprints[edit]

Blueprints provides comprehensive education support for out-of-school children, ranging from non-formal education to preparation for integration in public schools.

Tchin Tcho Critical Care Nursery[edit]

The Tchin Tcho Critical Care Nursery provides childcare for young children in critical situations (neglect or abuse) following a comprehensive Early Childhood Development curriculum.

Superheroes Academy & Digital Superheroes Academy[edit]

The Superheroes Academy teaches life skills to children in the form of 'superpowers'[7]. The Digital Superheroes Academy is an open source app for teaching critical thinking, life skills and soft skills[8] at scale within the region and in partnership with Australian DFAT and MIT Solve.[9]

Up Start[edit]

Up Start is program with local public Thai schools to provide work readiness and English language lessons to migrant students, who are exposed to new opportunities and positive role models.

Smile Holidays[edit]

Smile Holidays takes place during Thai summer holidays (October & April). This program provides a safe space for children to play from various marginalized communities for a 'summer camp' program.

Migrant Empowerment Project[edit]

The Migrant Empowerment Project provides life skill trainings to construction workers. Forming a network throughout Thailand, these Peer Educators are empowered with essential knowledge such as child protection.

Dao Social Enterprise[edit]

Dao Social Enterprise provides work readiness skills and trainings in sewing to women in critical need of support. Products are produced by local women in need and provided as corporate gifts. Profits go back into Baan Dek Foundation's programs.[10]

Partnerships[edit]

Baan Dek Foundation provides systematic impact in the Thai construction sector for vulnerable migrant children in collaboration with the private sector. Several partners, including Sansiri, one of the largest real estate companies in Thailand and leading Thai property developer[11], served as major contributors to the joint research publication with UNICEF entitled 'Building Futures in Thailand: Support to Children Living in Construction Site Camps' (2018).[12]

Baan Dek Foundation fosters both leading institutional and corporate partners in order to carry out its programs and work. Institutional partnerships include: Australian DFAT for the Digital Superheroes Academy (DSHA)[13], Kindernothilfe regarding the Migrant Empowerment Project, IMF through the UpStart program, and UEFA Foundation for Children on the joint Football4Good program[14]. Leading corporate partners of Baan Dek Foundation include: Amadeus[15], Engie[16] and Valneva[17] among others through strategic and programmatic support.
