Baba Sodal Mandir (Hindi: बाबा सोढल मंदिर ) or Baba Sodal Temple is located in Jalandhar, Punjab, India. This temple is devoted to Baba Sodal and is believed to be at least 200 years old. As we know that India is country where lots of festival and fairs are celebrated every year. In which thousands of people gathered to celebrate and visit every day. Because their religious beliefs and rituals and are linked. One of the such type of fair is also celebrated on anant chodas in Jalandhar district of Punjab every year. Where more than one and half million i.e 15 lakhs devotees mark their presence from the world to pay a tribute to their deity. The fair particularly takes place on the 14th of Shukal Paksh in Month of September(Bhadon). .

Legends Behind Baba Sodal fair (Mela)

As per Legend , it is assumed that Baba Sodal took birth in the Chadha Family i.e Khatri caste. There was a Famous story associated with Baba Sodal is that when he was small boy. He always used to follow his mother. One day his mother was busy in washing cloths near the pond . The boy likes to irritate her mother continuously. Once she became very angry and says his son to go away but the boy did not stopped. Mother cursed his son very badly. He asked his mother to repeat the words thrice. As ,she was very angry at that time. When she did it. The boy jumped into the pond and never returned back. He disappeared in the pond. When he did not came back mother starts crying. People immediately gathered and started searching the boy but even body was not not recovered.

It is said that after sometime boy appeared in the form of holy snake and declared his farewell from this mortal world. As boy belongs to Chadha family, so he also demanded his reincamation should be accepted by Chadha and anand families and offer him Mathi or Topa (local flour made snake). He declared only clan of Chadha family members could consume topa.after that every year , on Amawasya (No-Moon Night) Before the baba sodal fair , the head of Chadha clan visits the baba sodal mandir and extract mud i.e 14 times from the holy pond for their sons.

As per Baba’s description “topa” should be weight against each member of bachelor brahmin’s family. It only can be consumed by members of Chadha clan, even their own son in laws are not allowed to have the share of “Topa”. Every member pays his obeisence to Sodal Baba , Kasar (kneading of simple flour) is made and offered forteen times gradually in parts on that special ocassion. On Amawasya ( no moon night) before Sodal fair head of Chadha clan visits the pond and extracts clay fourteen times for his each son. This means to make Baba Ji appear on the day of Tryodashi (13th of local month). On Chaturdashi (14th of local month) all members of Chadha clan eat only fried food especially made from a traditional crokery and Eight days ahead of this festival all members of Chadha clan sow ‘Kheti’ on the name of Baba Ji. Which is basically done to achieve happy and prosperous life for family members. It is also believed that till the completion of all marriage rituals of newly married couples. The bride had to stay with baba’s holy sandals, then only she is accepted as a new member of Chadha’s family.

On the day of fair the people comes to take blessings of baba sodal and there is a holy pond also in which people dip to take bath in sarovar’s holy water. Which is the main attraction of piligrims during the baba sodal fair. The fair is organized at the place of baba sodal Samadhi. Which is decorated very good during the fair & other occasions. There is a painted portrait placed at baba’s Samadhi with flowers and other decorative items. People comes from very far places to take blessings of baba sodal & attend mundan ceremony.
