Presidential Youth Council (PYC)[edit]

On July 29, 2015 Babangida Ruma wrote an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari calling for him to create Presidential Youth Council In Nigeria, The Presidential Youth Council, composed of young Nigerians ages 16–24. It would advise the President on the perspectives of young people and the design and implementation of youth policies and allow young people to provide solutions to the most pressing issues facing the future of Nigeria.[22]

Goals[edit]

  • Collect and share with the President issues relevant to the Nigerian young under the age of 24 through listening sessions across the country.
  • Provide recommendations on the design and implementation of federal policies affecting young people. This will make the federal government more efficient and effective by incorporating young people's innovative solutions and unique perspective.
  • Develop quality solutions on the most pressing issues facing the future of our country by creating a forum in which young people of differing viewpoints can find common ground. Solutions will require two thirds of all members to vote in the affirmative to promote compromise.

Why Presidential Youth Council[edit]

Lack of Youth Representation in the Federal Government; For too long, the views of youth have been absent from the federal policymaking process. Nigerian youth are constitutionally barred from being elected federal officials, and there is no single young person under the age of 22 on a Presidential Advisory Committee. We believe that this does two things. First, it produces inefficient and ineffective policy outcomes that could easily be remedied. Second, it dissuades Nigerian youth from being civically engaged; Only 29% of young people believe they have a say in what the government does. That is a massive problem. Right now, we need young people to embrace their role in ensuring that the challenges of today do not become the challenges of tomorrow; That will not happen if the federal government does not give young Nigerians a seat at the table in the federal policymaking process. Our federal government needs a new source of Common Sense, innovative ideas, and Presidential Youth Council can be that source.
