Babcock Wanson is an international firm that is specialised in the providing industrial boilers, burners and all related services.Founded in 1898, Babcock Wanson is today a leading firm in maintaining, monitoring and optimisation of industrial boiler. Thus, Babcock Wanson provides proven quality and services which allows it to differentiate itself from rival firms as it optimises the energy production of its customers[4]

Cyril FOURNIER MONTGIEUX worked for over 10 years before becoming the president of Babcock Wanson. The head office and the manufacturing centre of the firm are located in Nérac (France). The two main production plants are located in Cavanago (Italy) and in Nérac (France).[5]

20th July 2016 is a historic date for Babcock Wanson as it marks its independence from the CNIM (Industrial Constructions of the Mediterranean) Group. The firm then established a partnership with Consolidation and Business Development Fund (FCDE: Fonds de Consolidation et de Développement des Entreprises). Through this, the firm was able sought out buyers who can invest to grow and expand the firm. With this divestiture project, CNIM allows Babcock Wanson to pursue its international development.[6]

Babcock Wanson, from the 19th to the 21st century[edit]

In 1898, the ancestors of Babcock Wanson, the Babcock & Wilcox French Construction Company, was founded. About twenty years later, Léon Wanson created the company Wanson January 24, 1929, initially known as Construction de C.M.T: Construction of Thermal Equipment (Matériel Thermique). That same year, Léon Wanson launched a magazine "La chaufferie", which became « le Bulletin Wanson » after the war.[7]

Léon Wanson explained in his memoir "Au fil de la plume"[8] that in 1931, his lifelong friend, Alfred Parent, suggested he must find an emblem that characterises the company. It is said that one day a close friend compared him to a buffalo about his stature and energy. Flattered by this comparison, it is therefore not surprising that his choice was directed towards this animal which is, as it is quoted in the book, as a powerful and dark animal.

It was therefore in 1951 that Alfred Parent created the Parent company based in Nérac in the South of France, and it was not until 1987 that Parent joined the Wanson Group.[9]

Thus in 1988, BABCOCK Enterprise is created by the grouping of the boiler division of BABCOCK & WILCOX with the company LARDET BABCOCK. In 1989, BABCOCK Enterprise became a wholly owned subsidiary of the CNIM Group. In 1990, the company WANSON is acquired by CNIM and then BABCOCK WANSON is created by the grouping of this one with the similar activity of BABCOCK Enterprise.[10]

Over the years, Babcock Wanson has become international and then it was in 1992 that the CNIM Group acquired the Italian company ITALWANSON which became Babcock Wanson Italiana. In 1998, CNIM created a new subsidiary in Central Europe: CNIM BABCOCK Central Europe. In 2007, a new company was created in the USA: Babcock Wanson USA, LLC. In 2008, Babcock Wanson changed his name to Babcock Wanson ESPAÑA.[11]

Finally, in 2016, Babcock Wanson becomes independent with the necessary financial support of the FCDE and embarks on an adventure increasingly oriented towards international and growth.[12]

Babcock Wanson Since 2016[edit]

The company focuses on the expectations of its customers with around 600 employees, more than the half take care of after-sales and services to best meet the needs.[13]

The company continues to internationalize with an organization composed of 8 companies as well as a global network of technical and commercial partners.[14]

Developed technologies and environmental performance[edit]

Produit Babcock Wanson

Babcock Wanson designs and manufactures boilers: its own boilers, burners and water treatment systems, while offering its customers a range that is the most adapted to the market. For example, the company supplies steam or thermal fluid delivery systems for industrial processes, which may be small to very large.[15] In this modern and dynamic environment, Babcock Wanson has integrated the intelligent system into its equipment:

  • Smart Boiler House with the BWE-manage3 system.
  • MAE BW 720

And Babcock Wanson puts the developed technologies at the service of energy and environmental performance:

  • Burners: In 2014, Babcock Wanson received funding from the ADEME for its research project called DEMOXYA (Development and Demonstration of Burners with very low emissions of nitrogen oxides).
  • EMR STOCK: a storage solution for all types of energy production, whether electrical or thermal.

To preserve air quality, Babcock Wanson has extensive expertise and tailor-made solutions thanks to its incinerators and thermal oxidizers. It minimizes the gaseous effluents resulting from polluting industrial processes (VOC, NH3, greases, etc.) but also recovers energy thanks to their combustion: These solutions combine respect for the environment and energy efficiency.[16]

Support its clients from the design to the maintenance[edit]

Babcock Wanson also offers services to support its clients from the design to the maintenance of the facilities. In this way, Babcock Wanson accompanies its customers in the maintenance of their equipment. The company offers Revamping solutions for existing boilers: To optimize existing installations, Babcock Wanson experts offers their customers:

  • Consulting, energy audit and expertise
  • Rehabilitation works to improve performance by implementing energy and environmental optimization solutions

Equipment rental is also available at Babcock Wanson, which is the French leader in industrial boiler rentals. Finally, Babcock Wanson offers intern or intra-company training courses on the main components of an industrial boiler room, as well as its conduct, operation and maintenance.

The factories[edit]

The 2 main production plants are in Italy in Cavenago di Brianza and in France in Nérac:[17]

Subsidiaries[edit]

To offer a global and local solution, Babcock Wanson has deployed a local network through the operational centers that allows to be closer to its customers to provide them with an adapted offer and a responsive service.

In this way, Babcock Wanson has 8 subsidiaries in Europe which are themselves declined in an agency located in the industrial basins.[18]

Corporate culture[edit]

Babcock Wanson is convinced that the management of energy resources will determine tomorrow's world, which is why his mission is to optimize energy consumption and, by this way, reducing the environmental impact of its industrial customers.

As a designer, manufacturer and installer of its boilers, burners and water treatment equipment, Babcock Wanson has all the necessary qualifications to provide service solutions that will reduce energy consumption and environmental footprints.

To achieve this goal, Babcock Wanson wants to be the leader whether for maintenance, support for the proper operation of products and even for the industrial optimization of boilers in each country.[19]

Future growth thanks to FCDE[edit]

On July 20, 2016, the FCDE acquired Babcock Wanson, who belonged to the CNIM group. It intends to accompany Babcock Wanson to a new stage in its development by providing the resources needed to support future growth and maintain competitiveness.

The FCDE is a French investment fund bringing together the main financial institutions operating in France (Bpifrance, banks and insurance companies).[20]

Babcock Wanson Management Team is therefore taking part in FCDE's investment with the ambition of becoming an independent European leader specializing Turnkey Installations management solutions in the process industries.[21]
