Born in 1901 in Anderlecht above a bakery, son of Léon-Hubert-Joseph (1873-1949) and Marie-Catherine Dorekens (1875-1950) His father was a fitter who worked at Bollinckx. Léon Wanson will become a fitter too as his father and install steam engines in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and even Rosario in Argentina. That's where his passion for mechanics comes from.

Léon Wanson is the founder of the group Wanson in 1949[1] and the firm Babcock Wanson[2] with his friend Alfred Parent.

Books[edit]

Léon Wanson wrote three books:

A book devoted to the work of the greenhouse workers in 1950: "Les Américains et nous"[3] and who received the Torlet Prize - Laureate of the French Academy, awarded for the social aspect of the book.

And a memory book he wrote in 1971 when he was in Cannes, to mark the anniversary of his 70th birthday, with the attention of telling his memories and tracing his youth. But this book tells more: his passion for his profession and for business.[4]

And Léon Wanson: "D'un continent à l'autre, souvenirs de voyage" (January 1,1970).[5]

Awards[edit]

During his career, many prizes were awarded to him:

  • The Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany at the initiative of the Association of Machine Manufacturers in Germany - Verein Deutscher Mashinebau Anstalten (VDMA) for introducing in Europe hot air heating without intermediate fluid, i.e. the thermoblock.[6][not in citation given][citation needed]
  • It is for the same reason that in 1964, under the government of General de Gaulle, France granted him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit Commercial and Industrial.[7][not in citation given][citation needed]
  • Two years later, Italy awarded him the National Merit Cross of the Italian Republic.
