Baby (Is It a Crime) is a song released in 2025, by Nigerian musician Rema. The song samples "Is it a crime" released by Sade in 1985.[1] It was produced by Nigerian producer P.Priime.[2] As of February 2025, the song was the most streamed Nigerian song of 2025 on Spotify.[3]
Release
Rema initially teased the song in November 2024, with a 1-minute and 21-second video posted on X.[4] On February 4 2025, Rema announced that the full song and the official video would be released on February 7.[5][6]The song was Rema's first single of 2025.[7] The song was released via Mavin Global, Jonzing World and Interscope Records.
Writing and Composition
Conteh of Rolling Stone, describes the song as a "sultry afrobeats song".[5] Akhimien of Premium Times Nigeria, has described the song as a fusion of "classic soul with Afrobeats".[8] Akhimien further writes that in the song Rema "oscillates between poetic seduction and streetwise bravado, using Nigerian pidgin and Yoruba to craft a more personal, rhythmic cadence".[8] It has also been described as a blend of "nostalgia and modern sound".[2]
The lyrics of the song have been said to "exude confidence, flirtation, and vulnerability".[8]
