History[edit]
Bachcare was founded in 2003 by Leslie Preston,[2] providing holiday homeowners and travellers with short term accommodation. Originating in Hahei and the Coromandel, Bachcare has expanded operations to most regions of New Zealand. Managing over 2,000 holiday homes across 150 locations with over 150,000 guests to its properties every year.
The company employs approximately 50 people at its support office in Auckland and works with approximately 100 contracted holiday managers across the North and South Islands of New Zealand.
Investigations by the Commerce Commission[3] led to the company being fined for manipulating customer reviews between 2017 and 2018.[4]
In 2019, Bachcare was acquired by Sykes Holiday Cottages,[5] and had been going through problems with scaling as they took on more properties and expanded further across New Zealand. Having a shortage of staff led to complaints from guests as some properties were not serviced.[6]
During the summer of 2022, many Bachcare guests were unable to access their holiday homes as they had been sent incorrect advice on key safes and key locations. Bachcare blamed a technical glitch in their systems.[7]
COVID-19 pandemic[edit]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many holiday marketplace sites, and the tourism industry as a whole, were negatively impacted[8] by either national or local government declarations of emergency. The company reported a large increase in domestic bookings as restrictions began to ease in early 2022,[9] and have forecasted further annual growth of the tourism industry coming out of the pandemic.[10]
