Backrooms is an sci-fi horror web series created by American YouTuber Kane Parsons (known online as Kane Pixels). It is loosely based on The Backrooms urban legend. The series debuted with the short film "The Backrooms (Found Footage)" which as has over 56 million views as of February 2024. Parsons would expand his series to include fourteen more short films. The series is slated for a film adaptation. Parsons is set to direct, alongside A24 producing.

The series revolves around Async, a fictional research institute that discovers the Backrooms and attempts to document and research it.

Development and themes[edit]

After making several Attack on Titan themed videos, Parsons was looking for "new things to do". He was in between projects at the time and wanted to create his own liminal space. Parsons was vaguely aware of the Backrooms in terms of the original image and caption that he saw on Instagram two years prior. However, he was not aware of the community behind it."I came across the original image on my computer … and I just thought, huh, it would be interesting to see if I could go to my 3D software, Blender, and try to recreate a scene in this environment," Parsons would remark. He would use Blender to create a test of the Backrooms. The test would consist of a chair being thrown and hitting a wall. This shot would later be used in the first video of the series.

In 1991 while filming a short film, cameraman Kane accidentally falls out of reality and suddenly finds himself in the Backrooms. He begins exploring his new surroundings, repeatedly calling out for help. Along the way, he feels like he's being watched. He then finds arrows drawn on several walls which eventually lead him to a wall with various graffiti. Among these is a drawing of a face and the words "Don't Move Stay Still". He then hears a sound behind him and turns to see a creature that begins to chase him. After being chased through several hallways, Kane finds a room with a hole in the floor and manages to escape the creature. He then finds a staircase that leads to a lower floor of the Backrooms, a hallway with white walls and wooden floors. Eventually, he finds an emergency exit door that only leads him to the same floor where he landed in the first place. After some time wandering, he eventually becomes pursued by another creature. Hearing it approaching, he hides from it in a narrow gap in the wall, which leads him to a deep slope at the end. As he looks down, he hears a noise from behind him, and he turns right as the creature runs up and catches him, causing him to drop the camera down the shute, and then teleports back to the outside world and falls from the sky onto a lawn.
