Badar Ali (born 12 December 1986) is an Indian social activist and politician. He is the founder and national president of Yuva Seva Samiti, an organization focused on youth development and minority rights. He is known for his activism on social justice issues and his participation in protests concerning Muslim and marginalized communities. He joined the Samajwadi Party in 2021.[2]

Early life

Badar Ali was born in the village of Dotai near Garhmukteshwar in Amroha district, Uttar Pradesh. He later moved to Meerut for education. His father, Zulfiqar Ali, was a government school teacher and a well-known social worker in Meerut.

Activism

Badar Ali began his activism as a student leader and established Yuva Seva Samiti in 2011. The organization engages in social and community development work, particularly focused on minority rights, education, and youth mobilization. [3][4][5][6][7]

Tabrez Ansari lynching case

In 2019, following the lynching of Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand, Badar Ali organized a protest rally in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The rally, held at Faiz-E-Am Inter College, was attended by thousands of people, including local religious leaders such as Sahar Qazi Professor Zainus Sajidin.

Badar Ali was subsequently arrested in connection with the rally and charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Gangster Act. He spent over five months in jail. His arrest drew the attention of civil rights organizations, and Bhim Army leader Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan reportedly visited him in jail.[8][9][10]

Hospital demolition

At the time of his 2019 arrest, Badar Ali was reportedly involved in the construction of a charitable hospital intended to serve underprivileged communities. During his detention, the under-construction hospital was demolished by local authorities under the state government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The demolition attracted criticism from some activists and supporters, who viewed it as politically motivated.[11]

Involvement in CAA/NRC protests

In December 2019, Badar Ali supported the nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). Shortly after his release from jail, he condemned the police firing that allegedly killed five individuals during a protest in Meerut on 20 December 2019. He filed a First Information Report (FIR) on behalf of the victims' families and offered financial assistance. He was reportedly placed under house arrest multiple times during this period.

Waqf Conference, 2024

On 11 November 2024, Badar Ali organized a major Waqf Conference under the banner of Yuva Seva Samiti at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium in Delhi. The event was held in opposition to the proposed Waqf Bill and was attended by thousands of people. Notable speakers included Maulana Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, General Secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Umrain Mahfooz Rahmani, Secretary of the Board, and former Rajya Sabha Member Mohammad Adeeb.[12][13][14]

Political career

In 2020, Badar Ali joined the Azad Samaj Party, a political organization founded by Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan, leader of the Bhim Army. His association with the party came after his release from jail in connection with the 2019 Tabrez Ansari lynching protest case. He was active in raising issues of social justice and minority rights during this period.[15]

In 2022, he joined the Samajwadi Party and was welcomed into the party in the presence of its national president Akhilesh Yadav.[16]

2017 Nagar Nigam elections

Yuva Seva Samiti contested the 2017 Nagar Nigam elections in Meerut and reportedly won five seats under Badar Ali’s leadership.[17]. The organization ranked third in the local elections, following the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), with the Indian National Congress and Samajwadi Party winning four and two seats respectively.

2024 Lok Sabha elections

In the run-up to the 2024 Indian general election, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) initially selected Badar Ali as its candidate for the Meerut-Hapur Lok Sabha seat. However, the decision was later reversed and a different candidate was fielded.[18][19][20]
