Badger[1] (Birmingham and District General Practitioner Emergency Room) also known as Badger Health Group and Badger Group is a not for profit healthcare co-operative providing what is thought to be UK's (if not the world's) first "drive-in" and "drive through" clinic for urgent primary care and GP out of hours service.[2]
Development[edit]
Drive in movies and drive thru fast food have been around for a long time but Badger's drive through-in and drive through clinic in a refurbished warehouse on an industrial estate on Bourne Road, Aston in Birmingham is both innovative and radical. It allows patients to drive straight in to see a doctor and doctors don't have to tell people to stay away if they were contagious. With the capacity to see up to 500 patients a day, the drive through clinic is a real alternative to traditional surgeries where patients can book themselves online. Badger's Drive-through clinic was launched by the West Midlands Mayor Andy Street on 23rd October 2021.[2] The piloting story behind this is that Badger had previously deployed a rapid assessment centre for COVID-19 using pods and tents in a car park next to the Nightingale Hospital at the NEC. However, at the height of pandemic this new idea was taken forward by Badger's co-founder, Dr Fay Wilson to provide care in an innovative way to prevent people from getting seriously ill, ending up in hospital and putting further pressure on NHS services. In an interview with ITV Dr Wilson said: "The purpose is so that we can see people safely, regardless of whether they might have Covid or not. We can give them the same standard of urgent treatment as if we were in previous times. And we can also see people with the same number of staff as quickly and efficiently as if Covid didn't exist - but while keeping everybody safe."[2]
History[edit]
Badger healthcare co-operative was established in 1996 [1] by local GPs to provide an improved out-of-hours service for their patients under the leadership of Dr Liz Nyholm and Dr Fay Wilson. Dr Wilson[3] continues to be a Board Director and also chairs the Birmingham Division of the British Medical Association. Today[4] Badger has over 230 opted-in GP members in 60+ practices and provides 24/7 message handling, urgent primary care and GP out of hours for their patients. It also holds contracts for out of hours, acute visiting and urgent care with CCGs in the West Midlands. It covers 1.6 million patients. It has received 'Good' rating by the Care Quality Commission inspection in all five areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led[5]
Over the years Badger added Sett Support Partnership plc, Badger Medical ltd and Badger Healthcare ltd in its not for profit group. Today Badger owns its headquarters premises, with call centre, treatment, training and office facilities and has a strong culture of learning, education and development as an employer of local people. Badger works in partnership with other organisations, including the NHS, commercial and voluntary sectors.[1]
