The Ballena Islands are a small group of uninhabited islands located in Sitka City and Borough, Alaska, United States.[1] These islands lie off the southeastern coast of Alaska in the Pacific Ocean, forming part of Alaska’s numerous minor coastal islands.
Geography
The Ballena Islands consist of several small, rocky islets. They appear on U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps of the Sitka area and are situated near Baranof Island.[2] Coordinates: 56°57′00″ N, 135°30′00″ W. The islands are low-lying, with an elevation of less than 10 meters (33 feet) above sea level.
Environment
Like many coastal islands in southeastern Alaska, the Ballena Islands are characterized by rocky shorelines, coastal vegetation, and surrounding waters that support marine life, including seabirds and fish species typical of the Pacific Northwest.
