The Ban 1080 Party was a political party in New Zealand that opposed the use of sodium fluoroacetate (1080) poison, widely used in New Zealand for controlling mammalian pests such as possums and rats.[2] The party was founded in 2014 by Bill Wallace and co-led by Wallace and Mike Downard.[3] It was registered by the Electoral Commission in 2014 and deregistered in February 2018.[4]
Policies[edit]
The party's main policy was to stop the Department of Conservation's controlled aerial 1080 poison programme and develop science-based, measurable pest control programmes involving community conservation.[5]
History[edit]
2014 general election[edit]
Wallace founded the party in 2014.[2][6] It was registered by the Electoral Commission in August 2014.[7] The party received 0.21% of the party vote in the 2014 general election but did not win any seats.
2017 general election[edit]
The party received 0.12% of the party vote (3,005) in the 2017 general election and failed to win any seats, leading to considerations about its future.[8]
Deregistration[edit]
The party was deregistered by the Electoral Commission at its own request on 28 February 2018.[4]
