The Bang Yai Interchange, historically known as the Bang Yai Intersection, is a multi-level grade-separated highway interchange located in Sao Thong Hin Subdistrict, Bang Yai District, Nonthaburi Province, Thailand.[1]
It serves as a major junction between Kanchanaphisek Road (Motorway 9), Rattanathibet Road (Route 302), and the eastern terminus of Motorway 81 (Bang Yai–Kanchanaburi Motorway).[2]
History
The intersection originally opened in 1985 as an at-grade, three-way traffic light-controlled junction following the completion of Rattanathibet Road.[3]
To relieve severe traffic congestion caused by rapid suburban residential and commercial expansion in western Greater Bangkok, construction of a grade-separated overpass system began in 1997. The project was completed in 1999, converting the junction into a multi-level interchange.[3]
During the late 2010s and early 2020s, the interchange underwent further reconfiguration to integrate the eastern terminus and main toll collection plaza for Motorway 81, establishing a controlled-access link between Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, and Kanchanaburi.[1][2]
Interchange layout
The interchange utilizes a combination of elevated flyovers, directional ramps, and at-grade frontage roads:
- Flyover ramps: Direct flyover ramps connect westbound Rattanathibet Road turning north onto Kanchanaphisek Road toward Bang Bua Thong, as well as northbound Kanchanaphisek Road turning east onto Rattanathibet Road toward Khae Rai.[3]
- Mainline underpass/at-grade lanes: Provide continuous north–south through traffic along Kanchanaphisek Road.[1]
- Motorway connection: A continuous directional extension links westbound Rattanathibet Road directly into the mainline of Motorway 81.[1]
Surroundings
The interchange is situated in the central commercial district of Bang Yai. Major points of interest in the immediate vicinity include:
- Central WestGate shopping complex
- MRT Purple Line (Talad Bang Yai MRT station and Sam Yaek Bang Yai MRT station)
- Kasemrad Hospital Rattanatibeth
