Banstead Woods Parkrun is a 5K run that takes place every Saturday morning at 9am in Banstead Woods, Surrey.[1] It has taken place every week since June 2007 and is entirely run by volunteers. It is part of the global network of free to enter Parkrun events which are organized every Saturday morning. More than 500 events have taken place.

Banstead Woods parkrun is notable for being only the third parkrun to start out of a network of more than 500 in the United Kingdom. More than 9,000 individual athletes have taken part.[2]

Course[edit]

Banstead Woods parkrun is just under two laps, running anticlockwise through woodland trail paths. The course is roughly a rectangular shape, with a very sharp hill around the start/finish. The last kilometre of each lap is downhill.

As with all other Parkrun events, the runs are organised by volunteers. Runners must pre-register on the Parkrun website and bring their barcode with them to get a recorded time for the event. With this barcode, a runner can record a time at any Parkrun they choose to run at.

History[edit]

Banstead parkrun held its first event on 16 June 2007. It is the third longest running parkrun event, after Bushy and Wimbledon Common parkruns. It has been held weekly, with very few exceptions (for extreme weather). The 100th event took place in April 2009, followed by the 250th in March 2012 and the 500th in December 2016. The record attendance is 293, set twice in 2017. The average attendance as of 2018 is just over 200, which has grown very slowly over the history of the event. The number has grown more slowly than for other Parkrun as neighboring events such as Nonsuch Parkrun have attracted local runners.

Organization[edit]

The event is solely run by volunteers, including a core group in addition to other helpers. Unlike other parkruns, this event has only few marshals on the route as the course is well marked out, with only 4 corners each lap. There is not usually a lead bike, but the event regularly has a photographer.[3]

Course Records[edit]
