Bardhyl Selimi is an Albanian-Kosovan mathematician, esperantist, translator and writer. He is a son of agriculturalist Adem Selimi and teacher Vezire Gjiraku.[2] Both parents were part of the intellectual elite in wartime Kosovo, Albanian Kingdom. During World War II, in 1943, Adem Selimi joined the Lidhja e Dytë e Prizerenit (Second League of Prizren) to fight against the Bulgarian occupiers. Meanwhile, Bardhyl was born. Afterward, as an anti-communist, Adem had to emigrate to Australia, while his wife fled for the relative safety of Tirana. In increasingly isolated communist Albania, with no hope to be reunited with Adem, Vezire married a fellow teacher, Mahmut Mezini.[3][4][5][6]

In 1967, Bardhyl Selimi graduated with a degree in Mathematics from the University of Tirana.[7][8] In 1972 he married a freshly graduated medical doctor, Vjollca. They have two sons, Indrit and Gentian. In 1973 Selimi was made a science editor at Albania’s central daily Zëri i Popullit (The People’s Voice).[9] But to continue at this post he was required to become a member of the Party of Labour of Albania. As part of his pre-membership probation, between 1974 and 1977, Selimi had to work as a manual laborer in the brick factory Kombinati i Tullave Lapraka[10] (part of the sq:Kombinati tekstileve "Stalin" Tiranë) located in the countryside, nowadays in Tirana 6's Kombinat neighborhood.[11][12] Sigurimi found out that his biological father resided in Australia, so Selimi’s application for party membership was rejected in 1976. He was internally exiled and taught mathematics in rural schools (that is, in the villages of Gurrë e Madhe, Mangull and Mushqeta).[13][14] Thanks to Vjollca’s profession, their family was allowed to return to Tirana, because of the then persisting shortage of medical doctors in communist Albania.[15][16]

Esperanto[edit]

After the end of communism in Albania in 1992, Selimi reinvented himself as a leading esperantist in the country.[17][18] In 1994, Selimi cofounded the eo:Albana Esperanto-Asocio (Esperanto Association of Albania), which is also known as the eo:Albana Esperanto-Instituto (Albanian Institute of Esperanto).[19] Selimi is a writer and cultural activist, but above all he is a prolific translator of world literature into Albanian, and of Albanian literature into Esperanto. Since 1991, he has contributed over 600 articles to the leading Esperanto monthly Monato,[20][21][22] and also writes to eo:La Gazeto.[23] In recognition for his work for Esperanto language and culture, in 2013 the Universal Esperanto Association awarded Bardhyl Selimi with the distinction Elstara Agado.[24] Thus far, he has been the sole Albanian and Kosovan recipient of this distinction.[25]
