Barlamane, or Barlamane.com (Arabic: برلمان.كوم) is an Arabic-language Moroccan online news website, founded in 2013 by Mohammed Khabbachi, former communications officer at the Ministry of Interior, and former lead at the Maghreb Arabe Presse.
The site is considered as part of the defamatory press/slander media phenomenon, and is accused of being connected with Moroccan intelligence services..[1], and to be used for defamation operations, spreading scandals and displaying the private life of political opponents and Moroccan journalists[2][3][4].
Etymology[edit]
The name of Barlamane.com originates from Arabic, where Barlamane means parliament.
Scandals[edit]
In 2017, Khalid Boubekri, the editor-in-chief of Barlamane.com, was brought before the National Judicial Police Division, as part of an investigation into the publication of his site of a compromising and humiliating video in which the leader of the Hirak Rif and political detainee Nasser Zefzafi appeared in his underwear inside a prison[5]. On November 17 of the same year, Boubekri appeared before the Ain Sebaâ correctional court, and was prosecuted for "broadcasting images of a detainee without the latter's authorization"[6]
In 2019, three ministers from the Justice and Development Party - PJD (Mustafa Ramid (Human Rights), Aziz Rabbah (Energy and Mines) and Lahcen Daoudi (Governance)) sued the site, after it revealed several cases of compromising moral affairs for the PJD, including the escapades of the deputy Amina Maelaïnine and the exact amount of the retirement pension of the former prime minister Abdelilah Benkirane[7][8]
