Barnet Young Conservatives are the local branch of the Conservative Party (UK) in the London Borough of Barnet. They participate in local government elections for the Barnet London Borough Council and support parliamentary candidates across the borough's constituencies.

History

The Conservative Party has been a significant political force in Barnet, a borough in North London. Over the years, Barnet Conservatives have led the council for multiple terms, maintaining a strong presence in areas such as Finchley, Hendon, and Chipping Barnet.

One of the most prominent figures associated with Barnet Conservatives is Margaret Thatcher, who served as MP for Finchley from 1959 to 1992.[1]

The impact in recent years that the young conservatives wing of Barnet Conservatives has played has become notable in the area.

Leadership

As of 2024, the Barnet Conservatives are led by Councillor Dan Thomas, who has served as the leader of the Conservative group on Barnet Council.

The sub-division of Barnet Conservatives, known as Barnet Young Conservatives is run by Kevin Gatesh, who also runs London Young Conservatives.

Council Performance

Barnet Conservatives controlled Barnet Council for many years, most recently from 2002 to 2022. In the 2022 Barnet London Borough Council election, the Conservatives lost control of the council to the Labour Party for the first time in two decades.[2]

Despite this, they remain the principal opposition party in Barnet and continue to campaign on local issues such as council tax, housing development, and public services.

Barnet is served by three parliamentary constituencies:

In early 2025, Kevin Ghate was selected as the Conservative candidate for the Burnt Oak by-election. His campaign received support from local party members and the Barnet Young Conservatives.[6]
