Barrie Pitt (1918-2006) was an author and editor of military histories.
He visited Portsmouth Southern Grammar School and became a bank clerk in 1935. In the Second World War, he served in the British Army. In 1954, he began writing. In 1961, he began as an Information Officer at the Atomic Energy Authority. In 1963, he started as a Historical Consultant to the BBC series The Great War. Editor-in-chief was the renowned military theorist and historian Sir Liddel Hart; he wanted to create a definitive record of World War II which would both hold up to academic scrutiny and be accessible to the general public.
In 1964, Pitt edited Purnell's History of the Second World War. He was editor in chief of Ian Ballantine's Illustrated History of World War Two (1968-1975, Ballantine Books published a series of 156 paperbook books) and Ballantine's Illustrated History of the Violent Century (1971).
He also edited Purnell's History of the First World War (1969); British History Illustrated (1974-1978) and was consultant editor for The Military History of World War Two (1986).[1]
