Barstow island
Barstow Island is an island that was part of Alabama and was established as an unincorporated area which had a population of 1,368 at its peak in 1898 and 870 before being abandoned.
Today the island remains underwater after a 6.3 earthquake in 1943 caused the island to sink 3 meters. It is also listed as an anarchist island having no rule and still does not to this day.
The island’s structures were destroyed by tidal waves and passing hurricanes after the earthquake and the island is now a designated coral reef with animals living in the remains of buildings and vehicles that sank after the earthquake.
Currently it is about 11 ft or about 3.2 meters in depth beneath the sea and in strong hurricanes that pass over the island, the island briefly becomes visible but only for just a few hours to a few days at most, with the island being too far down to be visible for longer periods of time.
Barstow Island’s residents were expelled in August–October 1943 due to the island slowly sinking after an earthquake that happened 31 miles south of it on August 7, 1943 and all 886 inhabitants were moved by October 13 that same year, with many moving to Mobile, Fairhope and Daphne as well as Dauphin Island, another low lying island in Alabama.
