Basant Ulaka is Indian politician from Odisha. He is known for being a popular and strong leader representing the tribals of Rayagada district. He has been state secretary of ST cell as well as Councillor of his home ward Ramachandra pur. In 2019 he was the MLA candidate from BJP party.

Early life[edit]

Born into a poor tribal farming family in Odisha on 05/05/83, Basant Ulaka didn't have much resources growing up. He started his schooling at the local school of Ramchandra pur. After 5 years of education, he decided to go to Gandhi nagar school in Rayagada township, to have better teachers and exposure. After completing his Matriculation, his situation demanded him to spend time and effort at his farm lands. he continued as a farmer till he was 22.

Early Politics[edit]

During his farming days, he noticed the stark difference of facilities between his locality and developed areas. With the constant realization of depravities of his people and the lack of Govt support for his village, at age 22 he started political movements targeted to improve lives of his ward. Gradually his popularity grew and in 2008 he fought and won councilor elections from his home ward of Ramchandra pur.

Councilor[edit]

At age 25, Basant Ulaka was one of the youngest coucilors of Odisha. Implementing on his dreams from when he was a farmer himself, he started working towards developing farming conditions of his ward. He brought the ward a concrete road, sanitation facilities, irrigation system, anganbadi center and availed more than 50 houses to the homeless under PMAY. The tribal people are among the most exploited labor force in India. Basant Ulaka registered such labors of his area in to labor registration program. From his school days, he wanted to improve his local school. Using funds from his councilor account and volunteer labor from his ward, the school became one the most awarded schools of Rayagada.

Land Reforms[edit]

A recurring theme of Basant Ulaka's efforts has been towards land reform for the scheduled tribal people.He started his political career in 2005 to address this issue and still continues to work towards it. In 2007 he formed the Adivasi Mahasangh, which he still leads as the president. This Mahasangh has helped thousands of Khonds and other tribal groups of the under developed Ryagada district.

MLA elections 2019[edit]

Basant Ulaka wanted to stay away from cast and tribe politics and focus on development of his people and locality. Inspired by Sri Narendra Modi he joined the BJP party in 2017. Due to his age, agenda and dedication towards the cause of development, he found most senior BJP members of the district and state supporting him in his mission. So just after 2 years of him joining the BJP party, he was selected to represent the party in Assembly election in 2019. He lost the election to Mr Makarand Muduli who is an veteran politician, but still managed to double the number of votes for his party.

Personal Life[edit]

Basant Ulaka is married with 2 sons. As a young leader, he has a friendly relation with his supporters. His tendency to be open minded and flexible in thinking has been appreciated even by his opposing sides. He believes in simple living and high thinking. usually he is seen in simple Kurta with a sleeveless jacket, but due to practical reasons he prefers denims with T-shirt when visiting remote hilly areas. Basant Ulaka takes good care of his health by walking and doing basic aerobatic exercises. he is also an avis practitioner of Yoga which he credits for his calm composure and ability to handle stress of being a political figure.
