Basotho religion (Sesotho: Tumelo ya Basotho) is a traditional African religion of the Basotho people of Southern Africa. It is an indigenous religion interconnected to the religions of other Bantu-speaking and Khoisan people in Southern Africa.[1]
The religion is polytheistic with animistic, totemic, and fetishistic elements but it is ultimately centered around a supreme deity called Modimo. Central to the religion is ancestor veneration as the ancestors, or Badimo, are believed to be living with the gods in the realm of the dead and they act as intercessors on behalf of the living.[1] [2]
