Batavia train is an Indonesian passenger train operated by Kereta Api Indonesia. It runs between Gambir and Solo Balapan via Purwokerto and Yogyakarta.
The name "Batavia" comes from the Batavia tribe, a Germanic people considered to be the ancestors of the Dutch. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) used this name for their administrative center in the Dutch East Indies after capturing and destroying Jayakarta in 1619.
The name "Batavia" has no connection to the indigenous people of the Indonesian archipelago, but rather symbolized the Dutch presence and dominance in their colony. During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies in 1942, Batavia's name was changed to Jakarta. Since the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence on 17 August 1945, the province of Jakarta has retained this name.
Jayakarta, which is the old name of Batavia is also used for a train service, namely the Jayakarta (train).
History
The Batavia train is a rebranding of the Manahan addition service which began operating on 7 February 2024. Initially, the train was known among railfan as a train that used a new train that hadn't been allocated.
In the enactment of new train travel chart 2025, officially, the Manahan Additional operates as an Additional Train under the brand name Batavia. The Batavia train uses the latest generation of stainless steel train sets manufactured by PT INKA, numbered TSB-15, allocated by the Jakarta Kota Train Depot.
These train sets were previously used by the Jayabaya (train), which is now implementing a train-swapping operation pattern with the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan. This pattern allows the use of only three train sets to operate two different trains.
Launching the Batavia train conducted on 6 February 2025 at Gambir by the Head of Operations Area 1 Jakarta, Yuskal Setiawan.[1]
