Batora: Lost Haven is a 2022 video game developed by Stormind Games[1] and published by Team17[2], released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X on 20th October 2022.[3]

Plot

Earth is dying. After a mysterious event, most of Earth was destroyed. Avril, a 16-year-old girl, has witnessed the death of her older sister Rose due to this event. She and her best friend Mila discover two amulets connected to two unknown entities, the Sun and the Moon. They are both transported to Gryja, the earth planet. Avril's journey will lead her to move around four different planets, each guarding an elemental essence, so that she can develop and acquire the necessary physical and mental power. By doing so she will be able to restore Earth to its former glory.

Along Avril's journey, she will learn different truths and just as many mysteries, which will create doubts about who and what surrounds her. But above all, she will meet Soren, the one who seems to have started the catastrophic line of events. Avril's path will be determined by her own decisions, and through each planet she will learn about the meaning of betrayal, friendship and sacrifice.

Gameplay

Batora: Lost Haven bases its uniqueness on a dual system that allows you to change nature to face opponents. Based on the dualism of the orange and purple color, with the first Avril will use melee attacks using her sword, with the second instead she will attack from a distance with mental blows.[4] All enemies, except hybrids that can be hit with both forms, will have a corresponding color that will indicate which form they should be attacked and defeated with: the mental one or the purple one.

To customize Avril's build, a rune system has been set up, collected during the main missions or purchased in certain shops. Each rune allows you to increase your stats of both forms. To be able to use them, you will need special points that will be unlocked by proceeding in the plot, depending on the choices made. Batora: Lost Haven has a multi-branching narrative that allows you to unlock Conqueror or Defender points depending on the choices made throughout the story. The choices will lead to one of the four endings foreseen by the plot, with the possibility of replaying the New Game Plus using the skills and runes acquired in the first run and increasing the degree of difficulty.

The game also features three different difficulties, which the player can select throughout the adventure as needed. This feature was introduced by patch 12.21[5] released on December 21st on Steam and later also on consoles.

Reception

Batora: Lost Haven received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic for the Xbox Series X.[9] version and "mixed or average" reviews for the PC and PlayStation 5 version.[10]

RPGFan stated that the story was "thought-provoking", and had "excellent use of decision-making, gorgeous artwork, fantastic music, fun puzzle elements, enjoyable combat when it hits the right notes".[11] The Games Machine called it "a great isometric action RPG, with awesome boss battles and multiple endings to increase its longevity".[12] Despite this, RPG Site called the narrative "mediocre" and highlighted a "thin structure" for gameplay, while indicating that Batora: Lost Haven has "adequate combat and respectable art"[13].

The soundtrack, created by composer Ron Fish, former author of the soundtracks of the Batman: Arkham series and God of War franchise, also met with positive reviews, including that of RPGFan, who noted the "stunning and powerful soundtrack permeating the game".[11]

Negative review has pointed out that the opening hours of the game seem too simplistic and that the story too silly [14]. A patch released two months after the game's release, let the team manage to make the first phase of the game more dynamic, listening to feedback from both critics and users [15].

On Metacritic it appears to be the #83 Most Discussed PC Game of 2022[16].
