The Battle of Chik Balapur took place in January 1771 and was a major battle between Mysore and Maratha. Gopal rao himself led the Maratha army as they advanced towards Haidar's camp. The first exploit of the Marathas after the departure of the Peshwa seems to have been the capture of Chik Balapur.

Battle

The Battle of Chik Balapur took place on December 1, 1771. Gopal rao himself led the Maratha army as they advanced towards Haidar's camp. The first exploit of the Marathas after the departure of the Peshwa seems to have been the capture of Chik Balapur. Trimbak Rao captured Gurumkonda in October after a long siege of about ten weeks. The place was then in charge of Saidu Mian, Mir Reza's nephew, who offered stubborn resistance to the Maratha. Gopal rao defeated three Mysore generals Chandroji Jadav, Balaji Pant and Syed Muhammad at Punganuru.

Aftermath

Towards the end of January, the Maratha captured Balapur and, as the Peshwa became ill, they returned to Poona, giving 10,000 troops and 10 guns to Trimbak rao. Gopal rao died on February 7.
