The Battle of Pirde (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) was one of two minor military confrontations between the Peshmerga and the Popular Mobilization Forces during the 2017 Iraqi–Kurdish conflict, the other being the Battle of Sihela. It was the first military confrontation between both sides[8] since the Battle of Kirkuk (2017).[9]

Background

The battle first started when Hashd al-Shaabi soldiers captured Altun Kupri and made an attempt at capturing Erbil.,[10] Clashes occurred north of Altun Kupri, in a village called "Topzawa"[11] rather than in the city itself, as Peshmerga forces attempted to destroy the Altun Kupri bridge, to block Iraqi reinforcements, destroying two armored vehicles in the process.[12] This also left the bridge damaged and unusable until 2020.[13][14][15]

The battle

The fighting began at 7:00 in the morning on the Erbil-to-Kirkuk road near the village of Pirde, when Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service began to mortar Kurdish units with the help of IRGC artillery experts.[16] An apparent 81-millimeter mortar exploded not far from a group of Kurdish generals standing outside a command post.[17] The battle ended in a Peshmerga victory, as the Popular Mobilization Forces were, according to Kurdish commanders and Masoud Barzani,[18] denied the chance to capture Erbil and restore the 36th parallel border (pre-2003 boundaries)[19] despite Iraqi forces capturing Kirkuk and other strategic areas. The battle continued for eight hours following the failure of Iraqi forces to cross the river toward Erbil.,[20] Iranian and Lebanese military experts, who had earlier assisted Iraqi forces in securing Kirkuk, were also present.
