The Battle of Salto do Uruguay was a naval battle between Brazilian and Paraguayan flotillas, on the Uruguay River, above the Uruguayan city of Salto, on July 31, 1865. This was the only battle of the war fought in Uruguayan territory. At the time, then Lieutenant Floriano Vieira Peixoto commanded an improvised flotilla that patrolled this region. To meet him, several Paraguayan canoes came, which were soon sunk in a fast and ferocious attack. This defeat interrupted communications between the invading columns of Lieutenant Colonel Antonio de la Cruz Estigarribia, in Brazil, and Major Pedro Duarte, in Argentina.
