Background
Marathas had captured the region of Kolvan encompassing a large area of modern-day Palghar district and a region of Southern Gujarat from the Koli Kings of Jawhar and Ramnagar who were vassals of the Mughal Empire. Vikramshah, the Koli King of Jawhar fled to Mughal Sardar Diler Khan stationed at Nashik with a large army. Diler Khan immediately sent his General Khijr Khan with an army of 10,000 to defeat the Marathas and to recapture Kolvan.
Battle
Khijr Khan decided to attack the Marathas led by Sambhaji in a full-fledged battle. The two forces clashed near the town of Vikramgad. The battle began with initial skirmishes which were inconclusive. Both forces clashed with each other and a fierce battle went on for 2–3 hours. Both sides had heavy casualties but the battle was still inconclusive until afternoon. Then the Marathas started to gain an upper hand in the battle, inflicting very heavy casualties on the Mughal army. Khijr Khan was himself wounded in the severe battle. Seeing this, the Mughal army started to flee towards Nashik. The Marathas routed the fleeing Mughal army. Victory in the battle of Vikramgad further consolidated the Maratha hold on Kolwan.
